Nodescan

1) The Private and Public shared folders (named "Public_files" and "Private_files" by default) are dedicated 'watched' folders. Any files placed in these folders will be automatically indexed (The folders are checked once per minute and the index is updated with changes such as additions and deletions).

• Any number of files and folders can be added and files in sub-directories will be included.
• Aliases to files and folders are supported on Mac OS X (but shortcuts on Windows and symlinks on Linux/Unix are not yet supported).
• You can change the private or public shared folder by selecting a new folder in the Server Setup window/Preferences. (It is not recommended to share your whole hard disk publicly)! You can drag and drop folders on to the associated directory panel in the File Sharing panels.
• Files added to these folders are owned by the server administrator so if you change the administrator name (in the Administrator account panel) you must update the index by clicking "Index files" in the File Sharing panel.
• The indexes are stored in the Indexes folder. You can back up the indexes to another location for safe keeping or delete them to permanently remove all shared files from the search results.
• All files uploaded or added to the shared folders are assigned to be either public or private.
• In the Search window you can locate all the files you own by clicking on "My files". This will show both public and privately shared files. Private files will not be visible to other users.
• Only the owner can delete files they have uploaded. Files shared using the shared folders cannot be deleted via Nodescan Client. (Clicking delete will remove the file from the index making it inaccessible but the file itself will not be deleted).

2) WebDAV sharing

• WebDAV is a file sharing protocol similar to FTP. Currently Nodescan allows one folder to be assigned as a WebDAV folder. This is designed to allow individual users to have their own file sharing folders inside the WebDAV folder. See the file "How to configure the realm file" in the Webserver_conf folder for more information about how to set this up.
• Properly configured, each user will be able to access only files stored in their own folder while the administrator can see and access all files. At this time files cannot be uploaded to the WebDAV folder by Nodescan Client, instead they can be added manually on the server or by using a WebDAV compatible application such as Transmit, Cyberduck or BitKinex.
• WebDAV sharing uses Digest Authentication which means that passwords are not sent in clear text. User's passwords are also not saved on the server.
• It might be convenient to put your Website folder inside the WebDAV folder. This will allow you to update your Nodescan website via the webDAV applications as you might be used to doing by FTP.
• Files uploaded to the WebDAV folder are assigned ownership based on the user login credentials. When connecting to the WebDAV folder, users will need to enter their username and password. If authorized, files will be added to the folder assigned to the user and indexed with that username.
• Nodescan users and WebDAV users are completely independent (usernames and passwords are managed separately).
• While it is possible to mount the WebDAV folder on the desktop in Mac OS X (either by using Connect to Server or using the disk mount feature in Transmit) or assigned to a drive letter in Windows, it is unreliable and not recommended at this time.

3) Web Share

• WebShare is a web browser-based service for uploading, downloading and sharing files by WebDAV. As explained above, user access is managed by the web realms files. Using Web Share you can share links to files via email by selecting the relevant files and clicking the "Share" button.
• It is highly recommended to use an HTML5 compatible browser, such as Safari 6, Firefox 22 or IE 10 or later. Using these browser allows large files to uploaded reliably and multiple files can be dropped and uploaded at once.

4) Nodescan File sharing

• This is the original Nodescan file sharing method where files are uploaded via the Sharing window in Nodescan Client. Files can only be selected one at a time however a folder can also be selected in which case all files contained in the folder will be compressed into one zip archive. (On Mac OS X, hold down the Control or Command keys on the keyboard while choosing a file, or drag a folder and drop it onto to the Choose button.)
• The file sharing window can be opened in various ways, such as by dragging a file or folder on to the search window or onto the "Share" icon in the Nodescan toolbar.
• The file sharing window allows files and archives to be defined as either public or private, tagged with custom keywords as well as adding a description and password.
• Files are shared by searching for them in the Search window and then dragging and dropping them onto users in the Contact and Chat windows or on to attachment icons in Instant Messages. You can also right mouse click on Files in the Search widow and choose "Send to.."
